We must get low-income Eastern Kentucky people into new homes they can afford on higher ground!

You can help save lives and transform the future of Appalachian Eastern Kentucky by supporting the work of HDA.

The housing need in Eastern Kentucky has reached a new level of urgency following a second devastating flood in less than three years. While we can’t move every family to higher ground, we hope to get as many people as we can out of harm’s way. The only way we can do that is through the generosity of our funders, volunteers, and donors, like you, who realize that a quality, safe, affordable home should be available to all. From 2022 & 2025 flood survivors, to low-income people in need of a home they can afford, to homeowners living on fixed incomes who need affordable repairs to make their homes better, your donations not only impact and improve lives in Eastern Kentucky – your gifts save them.

"Me and my four kids are homeless because of the flood. I need to see if we can get assistance to have a home (built). We're sleeping in my vehicle."

Extreme weather-related disasters are becoming more commonplace in Kentucky. In Eastern Kentucky, we’ve been hit with two devastating floods less than three years apart. Prior to these floods, which, collectively, have destroyed hundreds of homes, there was already a deepening housing crisis in our region. Before 2022, there were 28,000 people in just the four counties we serve who were living in inadequate housing. That’s over 40% of the total population!

The floods have laid bare the extraordinary affordable housing needs of our community. With around 1/4 of people in our service area living on less than $25,000 a year, replacing or repairing a home is going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

And then, there are low-income people who need a new home they can afford not because of the flood, but because they currently live in a place where rent or the mortgage is too high, where there are too many people living in not enough space, or where critical repairs have been put off (due to the high cost), making the home unsafe or unfit to live in.

Make an impact that will last lifetimes by donating to make a difference through HDA’s affordable housing programs in Eastern Kentucky!
